I was given a potted mum and don't know how to care for it. Don't want it to die.?
Question:I wanted to know how often to water it and how much sun it needs. I do not have a yard or anything but I have a porch. Would it be happier in or outside? Thanks for your time.
Answers:
It likes sun.will be happier and last longer outside.and if it survives, (I know it will) it will flower until the late fall for you.
In late autumn, after bloom is through, cut back plants, leaving stems about 6 to 8 inches long. (In cold climates, wait until spring, after new growth appears at the base.) Move the pots to a sheltered area protected from frost, and make sure the soil doesn't dry out over winter. When new growth emerges in spring, apply a complete fertilizer, then feed plants weekly with liquid fertilizer through the growing season until buds show color. To keep plants bushy, pinch tips through the summer, nipping the top pair of leaves on every shoot that reaches 5 inches long.
good luck
call a flower shop and ask them. or search the web.
Definitely outside, mums are usually sold in the fall because they are quite hardy little plants. But they do potentially die in a severe frost. Keep it outside in the sun...depending on the size of the pot it's in you might want to consider moving it to a bigger one. ANY plant is happy to dry out before a good watering, this promotes growth. It's kind of like forcing it in a way. Since it's outside, rainwater is best and water it yourself when it's dry. If it freezes in the winter, cover the pot with a plastic bag and simply leave it out. Hope that helps!
