What causes a fridge to freez up and not circulate?
Question:after about two weeks from a complete thaw, unpluged the freezed compt will turn to a block of ice and nothing will freez solid and ths refridgeraton comp won't cool
Answers:
most likly condensation, check all your door seals also check the fan if it is visable in the freezer make sure its not blocked try lowering the settings sometimes when you set them to the max it can't handle it also make sure the dripp pan underneath is clean and the coils on the back(if that type model) are free of debris can be vacuumed and plenty of room at least 4-6" from wall in back
its too packed in.. too much stuff in your freezer, i know that happens sometimes... or if thats not it, then i dont know... you might need a new freezer
Call a repairman, the problem is something you probably can't handle alone. I think the problem is in one of hi/lo switches, save the food and aggrevation. Get a pro!!
Take off the botton plastic cover and vaccum the coils, if they are plugged up the unit cannot "breathe" and will not work.
I assume this is a "frost-free" type of refrigerator? If so , your problem is either the defrost timer motor has seized (most common problem ) , your defrost termination switch is "open" , or the defrost heater is burned out .
Any one of these 3 faults will give you the exact same symptoms ... frost buildup in the freezer section . The frost slowly builds to the point where it blocks the air from circulating to the fresh food section , and the whole fridge starts to warm up .
If I had to guess , I`d say your defrost timer is shot . You can check it by turning the centre stub shaft on it slowly clockwise with a straight screwdriver till you hear a loud click . If the fridge happens to be running while you`re doing this , it`ll stop .
Leave the timer in the position it was when you heard the click . In about 25 - 35 minutes , the fridge should start running again . If it doesn`t , your timer needs replacing .
Most timers are found either in the front bottom of the fridge , or at the back , in the compressor compartment . They are usually enclosed in a small metal box with a hole in the front so you can access the stub shaft .
If the timer is ok , the termination switch and main heater have to be checked , although without you having the special meters , I`d say call a repairman .
It could be the circulating fan. This happened to me.The fan quit and had to be replaced. It is located in the freezer area.
This actually happened twice with different refrigerators. One fan was located in the bottom of the freezer under the bottom shelf and the second time it was behind the freezer wall close to the top.
