What kind of fish can you put in a pond to help keep it clean?
Question:I have a large pond with no fish in it and there's always gross things growing floating. I heard that if you put certain fish in it, they'll eat this stuff and help keep it clean.
Anyone know if there's any truth to this? If so, what kind of fish should I put in it? I heard small mouth bass.
Answers:
All fish, especially koi and goldfish, will add more than they remove. What goes in must come out. You will need a filter and pump. I recommend plants. If it gets plenty of sun add water lillies and bog plants for the shallower areas. Many nursery plants do well in ponds. Clean it first. A good balance of plants and your pond will stay nice. Add small fish that stay small to control mosquitos.
Most ponds use catfish or carp. They are "bottom feeders" and eat trash.
algee eaters, they work in fish tanks i dont see why not in ponds
