Answers:
Gypsy Moth Catepillars? ( probably) Get some Bt for caterpillars .It's a bacteria ,Bacccillus thuringensis, that kills only certain caterpillars .It'll be labeled for caterpillars ( there are other strains for other insects ) . Don't remember any brand names , so read label for active ingredient.
I'd think the birds would eat the caterpillars. Anyway, birds are very sensitive, and I wouldn't use anything near them. If you are looking for something to spray on your plants to discourage nibblers, I have used a solution of antibiotic dish soap and Listerine mouth wash, and sprayed it on the leaves. It does a pretty good job of repelling. Other than that, I recommend you go to your local nursery and ask what, if anything, is a natural predator of the caterpillars.
