Oh, no. They're actually growing?!? Now what?

Question:A coworker of mine somehow came under the mistaken impression that I'm a big time plant person. On a whim, he went to the dollar store bought a red plastic easter egg full of tomato seeds that were "Guaranteed To Grow!"

Yeah, right.

Just for the heck of it, I planted six of the twenty seeds in an extra pot I had lying around. A week later, I got the shock of my life.

Five little tomato plants are growing in my pot! Yikes!

They're getting over an inch tall now and I know enough about tomato plants to know those five little seedlings of mine can't stay like that. That's all I know.

Any suggestions for keeping the buggers alive? I live in an apartment and I don't get a whole lot of sun on my porch. My only success with plants are a couple of exotics - at least, until the neighbor kid across the hall poured bleach on them just to be cute.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on rearing baby tomatoes!

Answers:
first you should give 4 of them away. I grow tomato's every year and I can tell you that 6 plants mean a lot of tomatoes. I have two plants and that's still more tomato' s than i can ever eat or give away. And there so easy to grow. Keep them in the sunniest part and just water them. They don't need much love just water. And be prepared for the plants to get 3 feet tall. Good Luck

CONGRATULATIONS - you are now a gardener
transplant seedlings into bigger pots, water first, and buy potting soil, water soil not leaves, keep warm, can cover in plastic and presto you will have tomatoes soon
You can successfully grow tomatoes in a patio pot. I would not plant more then one for ever twelve inch pot tho. When your seedlings are at least four to five inches tall, transplant each of them to a larger pot and plant them deeper leaving only one set of leafs above the soil level. All the plant below will send out roots making it a stronger plant. When it reaches about five to six inches put a three foot stake in the pot for support and secure with a loose string to protect from wind damage. Ortho makes a great organic fertilizer you should use regularly. Follow directions on package. Water tomatoes daily, a tomatoe plant can use a gallon of water a day during warm weather.
