There are lots of great sewing machines out there, and if you've looked it's kind of confusing! You can get a cheapo at Walmart or Target for about $80 or you can go as high as in the thousands of dollars. (Just don't get one of those $20-$40 mini machines, they are really cruddy!)
Depending on what you will be using it for is how to select one. And how much of a beginner are you? If you plan on doing basic projects but want to learn and try more sewing techniques, then I'd recommend one that will allow you to grow as your skills develop.
I just bought a Euro Pro Shark Computerized sewing machine at Target for $300, I really like it as it does all I need a machine to do. I've been sewing for 40 years now and don't feel those really super duper fancy machines are what I need, I just do crafts, quilting, garments and home decor.
A basic simple model like http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... or http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=... would be a good one to work on basic skills and you can graduate to a better more expensive machine if you really want to advance!
Happy Stitching!
My machine http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=... is on sale now! I should have waited and saved $50, LOL!
I would say a used one, Singer. They're cheap, and will let you learn before you spend the big money on one you want.
