What kind of berries lood exactly like mini strawberries?
Question:I have berries growing all around my house that I thought were just little strawberries, but I'm not so sure now. They are about 1/2-3/4 inch long and look just like strawberries, but they do not smell like strawberries. Are strawberries bright red before they grow to full size?
Answers:
At first I thought maybe wild strawberries, and that could still be true. But I would have to agree with Gunner, check the leaves. The leaf texture and shape often tell more about plants than any fruit they may bear, especially off season. Don't eat anything wild unless you are 100% sure what it is. Double cross-reference it in comparative photos and sketches. If you are really into this thing, I recommend any of the Peterson's guides to wild edible and/or medicinal/poisonous plants. I find these books to be most reliable. Don't be thrown off by the sketches (they don't use photos) and there is a reason for this: Sketches are able to capture texture, shape, and other variations. While photos may obscure the details with differents shades of colors. The texts offer adequette color description variations.
It sounds like you have wild strawberries. They won't get as big as berries you buy in the supermarket.
Strawberries grow to full size (like the ones you buy) then they turn red indicating they are ripe.
All strawberries smell the same, even the wild ones If it doesn't smell like one, don't eat it. They turn from a whiteish green to red as they ripen. Checkout the leaves, they are all the same. It should be a plant {not a vine}.
I have these too! My mom actually tried them and said they didn't taste like anything. We thought they were strawberries too... but they do seem to be on vines, not plants.
Were there yellow flowers first?
