I have a raccoon problem!?!?

Question:I have a raccoon living in my attic that apparently has had babies up there. I know because I saw them all the other night on the roof of my porch! The raccoon got in by bending the grates of an attic vent over my back porch's roof. Animal control will do nothing and I have called a service which wants to set traps and charge per animal to remove them: too expensive. I am looking for an inexpensive way to get the raccoons out of my attic and would really like to do this without harming them. Any ideas?

Answers:
If you can wait they will move out and then cover access. You can also buy a cheap trap, but the babies? You'll have difficulty till the young ones get big enough to manage on their own. If you can see them all outside all together, scare them away from the house and immediately cover the access. Try very hard not to have a poor dead racoon rotting in your attic.

spread moth balls around
Contact the humane society again, that's what they get paid for.
See if you have a State Trappers Association. They have people that will come and remove the racoons without much cost. ( live trap not hurt the animals)
This is your bro. I read a post of somebody who had a raccoon that was living in their basement. A person suggested that they spray ammonia or vinegar in that area and that the smell would make the raccoon want to leave. I am not sure if this would be too toxic for the raccoons but it may be worth a try.
