Homeowners pay before service or after service?

Question:as a new pest technican i'm required to collect payment before spraying for bugs is that good or bad business? Most of the time i think they expect for spray first then pay later/whats ur thoughts

Answers:
In my locksmith business I never had any problem getting paid by homeowners, especially since I made sure we had agreed on a price before i started the work- there were no surprises

Landlords are another story. Usually you wait to get paid until they want you to do something else for them.

I think it is bad business, it sounds like you don't trust your customers, to pay you.
Whatever the policy is, that is the policy. Get tougher kid.
all contractors work first then get paid period.
More common is one-third or one-half first then the rest when the job is done to satisfaction. I no longer hire anyone who demands full pay up-front having been burned too many times to count
IF your company ask for money up front you should get another job to ask for a creit check before service is total unreal. bad pest contol company . this kind of work is killing the p.c. ind. do a creit report on them .I have been in the ind. for 18 yrs .dad sold p.c. company in fla. they are giving you and the ind. a bad name go and kill bugs with someone else.
i'm not in the pest control business but just generally speaking when someone wants their money up front my fraud alarm goes into high gear. in the construction business there are several ways to answer your question, sometimes contractors ask for a percentage up front to buy materials and such, sometimes there is a percentage paid up front and then more is paid as certain benchmarks are met with something like 10% withheld until the job is complete and the buyer is satisfied with the results. in your case my opinion would be that if you are doing a small residential job you should spray and then get paid if the homeowner and you agree that what you agreed to do has been accomplished. in the case of a large commercial job i think you would have a valid reason to ask for an amount up front for materials and such. in any case i would suggest that the most important thing to do is sit down with the client and put pen to paper and get in black and white what the two of you expect from each other.
I have to say from experience of being conned by a contractor, to do the job first. If you have faith in the work you do as being a good pest control technician, you should have no problems in collecting.

My husband and I hired someone to build a 10' x 30' 3 season porch attached to our house and the guy insisted he needed 1/3 up front. I was O.K. with that, but then 3 days later he wanted the 2nd 1/3, which I was not O.K. with at all, and needless to say, the guy didn't finish the job, left us with charges he made in our name at local building supply businesses and we, ourselves, had to finish the job. Then when I tried to take him to court to get back the money he was over paid, it was tough luck to us.

So yes, it would be bad business, unless the customer insists on paying you themselves after the job is finished.
