Garden Soil Contamination/ Does any one know of any testing kit to test soil for bacteria?

Question:or cemical contamination ? both my husband and I have had food poisonig by eating lettuce grown in cow manure, we are a bit worried that all our veggies might be contaminated by either slug pellets or the cow manure, and do not want to poison our selves again. We would be very grateful if any one can help

Answers:
Your soil will have billions of bacteria in every handful. It is always a good idea to wash all vegetables in tap water before eating them to remove the bacteria. Regarding chemical contamination if everything is looking healthy you should be ok. If your house was build on a 'brown field' site ie an old factory there is a slight risk of contamination in the soil. Your local Environmental Health Department will be able to advise on this further.
Slug pellets contain an emetic so if you had eaten one you should be very sick extremely quickly.

County Extension Center will test it for free. call them.
Be sure to have it done.
