How to save walnuts on the tree from pesky squirrels without killing the squirrels?

Question:The tree is in our home backyard in Sunnyvale, California. We saw squirrels eating the fruit on July 4, 2007.

offer the squirrels a mixture of corn seed or dried corn on the cob away from the trees, and keep making each time further away, the squirrels will leave the walnuts alone.
