Whats more destructive termites or carpenter ants?

Question:i live in western new york

Answers:
I understood them to be the same thing, more or less. There are different types of termites as well, one is subterranean and the other is...well, not dirt dwelling.

In California, where I live, being near the ocean guarantees termite infestation. When termites are exterminated by spraying, such as fumigation and tenting, the termites are not terminated, they are just shooed away. So when you neighbor tents their house, be ready for the termite invasion to come to call at your house!

I hired a company who used a nerve gas (that only affects the termites) and the drilled holes into the walls of the house and sprayed a foam inside that slowly drove the termites delirious and ultimately killed them. The damage they left behind was phenomenal - a cat walk which linked our main house to the guest house in the back had to be rebuilt after it collapsed!

It is my understanding that carpenter ants are not damaging. They live in wood that was already damaged by dry rot and termites.
