How do I know if there's enough D.E. in my filter?
Question:I just openeed my pool for the summer and when I turn it on, the pressure goes from about 10 up to about 20 after two hours and stays there.. I fear that I might not have enough D.E. in there, but how can you tell?

Les gave some good advice. It's always best to recharge the system when opening the pool for the season.
The only issue I have with the advice is that 6lbs of DE works for him, but may not be the required amount for your particular filter. So check the manufacturer recommendation on the required amount.
A jump from 10-20psi tells me that your DE is dirty and clogged. With clean DE you will maintain a lower pressure, as it clogs up your pressure will climb. Rather than to rely on pressure to tell you when to backwash and recharge, it's best to have a flow meter installed after the filter and at least 12" away from any angles in the plumbing. These are relatively cheap and can be installed in a matter of a half hour or less. All that's required is a drill, screw driver, and patience.
Monitor the flow rate with a freshly charged filter medium and record this rate. Once it drops to 30-50% of "normal" flow then you know it's time to backwash and recharge the medium. Since DE filters such small particulate relying on pressure can cause you to change the medium more often than is really needed.
When you open your pool your gonna have to back wash (drain out D.E.) about 2 to 3 times before she'll stay at around 10 psi. Your filter is working and it's filtering all the small particles like pollen and other suspended debris. Make sure you bump it too when your back washing making sure you get all the D.E. out and then 6 lbs of D.E. to recharge the system, use an empty 1 lb coffee can works the best, good luck and feel free to contact me. I've had my same D.E. filter for 28 yrs and just opened my 27 ft rd pool last weekend and my water is crystal clear in 2 days, good luck Les the painter
