Tips to secure valuables in my new apartment?
Question:I'm going to be moving out on my own soon and I'm looking for easy and cheap ideas to secure my valuables. I've read a lot of ideas about creating spaces behind kickboards, but I can't find any websites with detailed "how-to" instructions.
A safe isn't the best solution because I'm renting. Does anyone know of any bookshelves or furnature designed with hiding spaces?
Answers:
First thing you really need to do is get renters insurence
you can get differnt types of safes not all them need to be bolted down you can get ones called "fire boxes" they're small and you can carry them They work great for important papers (birth certificates, rental lease, other important papers) and they'll hold small valuables but good locks on doors and windows work great too and make sure you always lock all ur doors and windows when you leave
blindes - if get blindes and keep em down when your not home no one can go peeking around in to your windows to see what you have
here is a bookcase (safe) not very cheap but i just put bookcase that are safes into the search bar

you need to buy a little safe from walmart, cost $28
yo u can keep it all in there, and carry it with you if needs be
just put the stuff in the pockets of a old coat and hang it in the back of the closet.
Want to secure your valuables? Take pictures of everything you find valuable. Purchase renters insurance. While talking to your insurance agency, show them pictures of your valuables and they will be able to set a price of your renters insurance, to make sure you have coverage in case anything would get stolen or damaged. If you want to protect valuables over a certain price, consider paying the cost of a safe, at a bank you trust. Still, insurance, on all your valuables, is recommended.
While you want a good place to secure the valuable from theft you also want something that you can pull out in a fire or flood. A small safe, technically called a firebox) is best.
If you think you are going to get hit by a pro the fancy furniture is useless. You can purchase all kinds of hiding place stuff at any of the novelty stores on line or the "spy" stores.
One of the easiest for small stuff is the fake outlet. You only need to make a small hole in the wallboard. If you already have a book collection buy some old books and cut out the inside with an exacto knife, glue the pages after the cutting and you have a great hidden safe.
type your security items on the web.
it will show you some items that look like dust spray cans, vegetables in cabinets, etc. Anything bigger, I would consider finding a security box at the bank.
build some pockets to fit on the back of heavy furniture and hide important things in there where nobody can see it unless they are helping move the piece. build a box and install it above the closet door on the inside of the closet. Screws to hold in place, and people will not see it. door opens when unlocked.
put little lights in the bottom of it and they will think it is just a light for the closet.
On your current bookshelf look for a book that is out of place. Pull that book out about 3/4 of the way out until you hear a click. After the click the bookshelf should spin around to reveal a secret compartment.
A good idea very inexpensive. You can purchase rental insurance. You can get approximately $10, 000 policy for a year for about $250 a year.
Also a good idea is to throw off a potential burglar. Purchase some costume jewerly and place it where they would look. Also place a few dollars somewhere to as well, that they would look. When they waste time finding those things they are going to believe you have nothing worth to steal. So they will move on.
The real valuables, a good place to hide them is in different places at least somewhere they wouldn't expect. Examples, alarm clock that you plug to the wall with a battery compartment. Small space but it works. Egg carton inside the refridge. A light fixture, buy a large jar of popcorn kernels, stick inside and cover with kernels.
There are jewelry armoires and cabinets made by Sauder that might be of help. You might also try an online search for hideaway storage, since using a safe isn't feasible for your apt.
I have found that I can find almost anything online for much less than I can buy in the retail market, so do your homework ---search, search, and search.
Rent a safe deposit box at your bank.
