Do fleas fly like flying insects...or do they just hop? Can they be mistaken for fruit flys?
Question:I've been finding insects crawling on my cats that I'm sure are fleas...but, I'm also finding insects that look VERY similar that are flying and sort of "hovering" over the trash inside my house that have things like banana peels and fruit and vegetable parts in them. Are the flying insects different from the ones I see crawling in the fur of my animals...or could they be one in the same?
Answers:
Ok, the fleas like "blood" for a meal...
What your seeing "buzzing" around your fruits and vegetables are "gnats"...They come from the ends of the bananas that you buy, and are more prevelant in the Summer, (though they come in the Winter too, but breed better in the Summer as its more condusive for them to live in).
Flea collar and some 7 Dust where they bed down at, will kill the fleas on your cat or dog.
Fly swatter will kill the gnats that fly around your fruits and veggys.
(Though, they may also be "small" flies that are newly hatched also, but, I am betting that they are the gnats that breed at the ends of a banana and you wouldnt "see" them if you try, simply because they lay eggs deep in the ends of each banana.
Put your bananas in a large baggie when you get them and you will find that they are in there, when the bananas ripen!
I wish you well...

different.
get front-lone for the felines and take the trash out more often to get rid of the fruit flies.
Fleas don't fly, only hop. Sounds like the other things are fruit flies. Actually if you look at them closely they don't look anything alike.
nah I dont think so fruit flies are the tiny little ones that fly and like fruit and other sweet sticky trash. I dont think they would want to hang around on your cats. Secondly the things that are on your cats problly are fleas get some flea shampoo for your cats. Or take them to the vet for a more effective medication.
If your cat has something crawling in his/her fur, then it most certainly is fleas. No they don't fly, they just jump and I think I read some place that they can jump several feet -- even on your bed.
Now the issue of the flying vermits -- they probably are the fruit fly. They're very small similar to a gnat. They can get into your house by some kind of hook or crook. When there's fruit kept outside the frig in a room, they seem to appear like magic.
If your cat has fleas, you'll need to buy some type of pet spray or powder to apply to it. Then, you'll need to purchase a product you can treat your house with if you have carpet. And don't forget about your yard if your cat goes outside. Those boogers multiply like rabbits in your carpet. They will bite you and your kids. And when they do, you'll know it.
Personally, if I had to take my pick between the two, I'd pick the fruit fly because they have a very short lifespan unlike the flea.
those are fruit flys on the garbage but fleas on your cat. you control the fruit flys by keeping the lid on all garbage and rinsing/covering the fruit in your house. the fleas you can get rid of by applying 'fontline' or 'advantage' (1-800-pet-meds) on the back of the cats neck. the live fleas will be killed within 24 hours, any fleas in the house will jump on and also be killed, any eggs will hatch, jump on, and be killed for about a month.
The cats are fleas..they hop only...The flies you see are "fruit flies" that love ripened fruit veggies...some stores I have seen let thier fruit go to ripe, and you will see them hovering over them.bad produce managers cause this
