Were moving in 45 days! I want to start now! What should I do first?
Question:Were going to keep the old house but my uncles going to live here, so we need to have all of our stuff out of the house. We are down sizing alot [we had 4 beds in the old house with 3 baths and the new has 3 beds 1 bath]. We have alot of juck in this house. Im thinking about packing the clothes that do not fit me in a box now, just to get it out of the way. In your experience what is the first ting someone should do when moving?? Thanks
Answers:
I would start with anything that you don't need for everyday living. I also recommend see Thur plastic bins instead of boxes for packing, you can get them cheap at Wal-Mart. It eliminates labeling and you can see whats in them without having to open them.
I pack up the kitchen first. just leave coffee cups out. then the dining rm, living rm, bed rms and baths last... that works for me. Start with wichever room you think has the most clutter. and start purging. for me it is the kitchen.
The first thing to do is decide what not to move with you and either have a garage sale or donate it to a good cause. This is the perfect time to downsize your belongs . . . it's amazing how much stuff you have that you don't use! Good Luck!
1) IMMEDIATELY put in change of address forms and the date your address change will be effective with the post office, credit cards, magazines, newspapers, and creditors.
2) A good rule of thumb is that if you haven't used something in the past twelve months, you don't really need it. (excluding things like photographs, nostalgic items and collectibles, of course.) So get RID of clutter. Don't just get it out of the way, get rid of it. Start by piling it somewhere and then either have a garage sale, donate it to a garage sale at a church or something, or call Goodwill or Salvation Army to pick it up or deliver it to them. You will get a very nice tax deduction.
3) Pack up all of your kitchen except the pots and dishes you will need just for your immediate family for the next month and a half. Use paper plates, etc. if you need more. This will help A LOT.
4) Do the same with clothing, bathrooms, extra linen, etc.
5) Go ahead and pack up books, knick-knacks, etc. Get BIG tubs and wrap the small items in newspaper or other paper. Keep a tub in every room to add to as the days progress toward your moving date.
6) Keep all cleaning supplies out till last. Keep all medical and toiletry supplies out till last.
This will help a lot. I have moved 15 times in 31 years of marriage!
Pare everything down to just the bare essentials. Just what you will need to live at the old house for the next 45 days, & pack everything else up. Then put it in the garage, storage, or the new house.
Have your family help by going through all of their own personal items, & doing the same.
For example: If you don't think you will be entertaining guests between now, & when you move, then pack up the dinning room 1st. Pack up your winter wear as well since it's not likely to snow between now, & then either.
I don't agree with one answerer who suggested the kitchen be packed up 1st unless you don't plan to eat in for the next 1 1/2 months. Just hold back on the bare essentials, & pack up everything else.
Happy moving!
Start with books. Pack them in small boxes, as they can be very heavy.
Pack knick-knacks. They take a lot of time to wrap and pack.
Pack off-season holiday decorations and clothing.
Starting with these things will give you a sense of accomplishment without impacting the things that you use every day.
You didn't ask, but the things that you should pack last are cleaning tools, disposable dinnerware, personal hygiene items and bath towels.
Good Luck!
start by going room by room and getting rid of junk, then pack up things you don't need for everyday living.I've moved alot in my time and the most important rule is if you haven't used it in 6 months you don't need it..moving is hard work,so you don't want to be hauling heavy boxes full of junk! also clean out one spare bedroom or designate a spot somewhere to put all the packed up boxes, makes moving it a little easier if its all together.
Start with each room and pack anything you are not going to use or need in the next 45 days, clothes, toys, books, dishes, pictures on wall, etc. Get boxes and be sure to label what room they are from and what's in them. Then stack them in a corner out of the way. Same thing in kitchen, pack away anything you know you won't use evey you plates, if you can handle using paper plates for a while. Also if you have an attic do the same thing with what's up there. Everything you can pack now you won't have to worry with later. Then when time comes most everything will be boxed but what you used and all you have to do is box the remaining things and move. Happy Moving!!
Okay, you said you're downsizing, you said you had junk, and you said you even have clothes that don't fit you anymore. Considering all of these three things, you first step is to purge! Toss the stuff you don't need. If you haven't used it in over a year (not counting things like holiday decorations), toss them. If you forgot you had them, toss them. Throw away the half full bottles of lotion and old makeup. Limit the number of "sentimental" things you're holding onto. Generally, if it is or will be a family heirloom, keep it. Otherwise, toss it. You don't need high school yearbooks, letter jackets, and gifts people gave you that you don't use or like, but you keep because so-and-so gave it to you.
As you go, pack up the stuff you're unlikely to use in the next 45 days. You can pretty much pack everything but your daily toiletries, the clothes you usually wear every week, basic kitchen supplies, and other items that you usually use in a day. If you don't use it every day (or almost daily), you should be just fine without it for 45 days. Keep your cleaning products free, since you'll probably use them as soon as you get into the new house. Remember to clearly label the boxes with the room, and if they're fragile and/or heavy. Best of luck!
One thing to add to the other's answers is when loading the moving van put the marked for each room boxes in first then the furnisher. Also have a pre-set up of your furnisher on paper before you move. Set the furnisher in your new house in the places you want first then pile in the boxes. This makes things so much easier to unpack if you don't have to shuffle furnisher around.
