Where can I get replacement covers for a collect of old 98 records.?
Question:I have just discovered Dads beautifully catalogued collection of records with the old brown cardboard covers dating back to the "forties" which I thought would be okay in a brick shed whilst having work done on the house. Sadlly they have got damp and mice have chewed the covers. I would like to replace them but what kind of firm would have them or make them. Also can I sponge them and with what as the covers have stuck to them though to records are of mint condition. I understand most household liquids are not mild enough though sadle soap has been suggested Do hope someone can help as It was a promise that they would never leave the family and I would like to get them back to the contion he left them
Answers:
Do you mean 78 rpm records or 1998 vinyls.
Whichever they are, you will still be able to get replacement covers in HMV, Virgin or any of the big music stores.
Are you sure you don't mean 78's?
Have the collection properly restored and then put up for auction, You will make more than enough back to pay for restoration. If you do it, it won't be as well done.
I am 77 and I used to have a vast collection of 78rpm records. When they got dirty I would wash them in toilet-soap using a genuine fibre nail brush, rinse them in cold water, and dry with a clean well washed cotton towel, nowadays I would use kitchen towel.
I transferred my whole collection to reel-to-reel tape.
I recently transferred the RTR collection to mini-disc, and the sound quality is very good, as I was able to edit the "run-in" and "run-out"of the 78 record.
FOOTNOTE . When doing the original transferring I damped the record with water to cut down on the hiss.
Concerning the paper covers , try a music store, they dump such things.
