Re Question regarding record covers. Sorry of course 78.?

Question:I was so upset I dashed to my computer without first getting my brain box into gear !!

Hey?

What do you say that we step back from the previous posts by brethren BSN record-cleaning experts and get back to simple logic?

That is, introducing foreign cleaning agents to delicate record grooves is NEVER a good idea. Personally, I've used a two-step, safe and effective cleaning routine for years.

First, I lift off as much dust and grime off a spinning disc with DISCWASHER 4. I have two DW brushes -- one for very dirty discs and another for already cleaned and new recordings. Usually, I spin the vinyl for about 10 wet revolutions, then brush dry.

Next, I take double-folded, fine-mesh cheescloth that has been dipped into DISTILLED WATER that has been shaken barely damp and formed into a pad. With it, I lightly circle the grooves a few times and have never been disappointed as to the amount of dirt that adheres to the damp pad.

If too much water still remains on the record, put the record back on the turnable and use another damp piece of cheesecloth -- fine mesh again, I emphasize -- to absorb the excess.

All that's left to do is take the record off the turntable, wave it to air dry (speaking of 45s here) and prepare to commence playing your newly cleaned disc without damage to the grooves, water residue or static electricity.

This method has always worked for me, and I believe it to be a safer alternative to the "soap-and-water" theorists' suggestions.
Is this any use?

10 pts to wizip, good advice for soundhounds,,,,,on 78s or 33 rpms, small specks in groove not removed by discwasher can be removed with a rounded pointy toothpick,,,maybe the tip moistened with discwasher or distilled h20,,,,use radio shack magnifier to work toothpick along the groove, good to remove food specks, second hand shops regularly toss out empty album covers,,,,you might askem to set some aside,or check their dumpsters once a week,,,,,cardboard sleeves could be covered, glued, and labeled with brown wrapping paper that ups packages are often wrapped with
