What causes my pickler cukes to be bitter?

Question:We tried our first cuke this week, but it was bitter - not bad where I had to spit it out, but it had a bite to it.

I was told the bitterness is cause from overwatering... but I doubt I've overwatered them.

Any other suggestions?

That's funny because I thought the bitterness comes from not enough water!

I just looked it up:

"Cucumbers can develop a bitter taste when soil moisture is inconsistent so keep the soil around the plants evenly moist. Most of the bitterness is concentrated in the ends of the fruits, so cut them off prior to slicing the fruits." from http://www.gardenguides.com/
