How can I safely dipose of a (cigarette) lighter?

Question:I found an old lighter that I consider definitely unsafe to use. It still contains a fair amount of gas, and says "Contains flammable gas under pressure... Never puncture or put in fire." How can I safely dispose of it without much trouble?

Answers:
Take it to your closest fire department.

I too have one I don't know how to dispose of. I have decided to give it to someone who I know smokes and can use it up.
Call your local fire dept. and ask them!
If it's the typical "Bic-type" lighter, the pressure in it is minimal so there is little real danger under normal conditions. However, DO NOT heat it or burn it. If you are really concerned that it is dangerous to use, open the gas valve without lighting it so all the gas can escape. Best to do it outside.
