Slugs coming into my KITCHEN !?

Question:I cant uunderstand it. I live in a terrace that has back yards, not gardens, in a city. Can't understand where they are coming from. They have to get under my yard door, or over a high pebble-dashed wall to get into the yard, and then crawl over a bristle doormat to get under my back door. What on earth is attracting them to my kitchen? They cant get into my vegetable rack and I try to keep my floors clean so why do they keep coming in night after night?

COPPER TAPE - If you know where the slugs are getting in, simply run a piece of copper tape across your door way (they sell it in most nurseries to keep slugs from window boxes) & it's environmentally friendly too! If you can't find copper tape, copper foil (from the craft store) or any type of copper will do. You could even run a small strip of copper roof flashing (avail at hadware stores) across your threshold, your window sils or across your porch steps. Easy & Cheep... What could be better

You must have damp in your kitchen, do you get woodlice too?
Pour salt in a line under your back step
They love the smell of beer - do you drink a lot??
it is pepper you need to put at the back door and hey presto no more slugs
i agree with the first poster -- salt in a line at your dooway will kill them!
Do you live near a river, or somewhere where the water table is high? They like the damp. Try to fill in any gaps in your skirting boards or doors with cling film - I can't remember why, but it worked for my Mum. Slug stoppa (kitty litter) outside the door also works nicely, as it's absorbant so they can't get across it without being tried out. And little piles of bran is quite good - they really love the stuff, but it dries them out from the inside out. They don't always make it out the door though, so it's not for the squeamish. You can buy copper tape which emits electrical pulses to them, but it's really expensive and you need loads. Kitty litter is the best thing for the job.

ETA Mrs B makes a good point - they like beer due to its high yeast content. If you have a bread maker, or get fresh bread in daily, they might be attracted to the smell of that.
The best way to get rid of slugs is to try and find out where you think they are coming from and sprinle salt all around that area I would use Sea salt as the granuals are bigger or you can use regular Table salt you might have to do it a few times but make sure you use a good amount in those areas.
I have the same problem.. I got slug pellets and this seemed to attract even more of the ugly buggers!! Then I put salt on them and they started to sizzle!!! And trying to clean all up is just as disgusting!!
A friend at work told me to put down some bleach and this will stop them coming onto the path so thats my next course of action!!!
I HATE SLUGS!!!
It sounds like they have crawled through a damp pipe that terminates in the yard. Look on the outside, are there any pipes that come out the wall and are not sealed? if so you should put a cover on it with tiny holes so liquids can pass when required but don't come in. You can buy pellets to kill slugs, and spray but because its in the kitchen i suggest pellets. Some people suggest using salt to block paths into the house however it usually blows in the wind, never blocks every entrance and a waste of money, also salting slugs cause them a lot of pain. Anyway i suggest checking for drainpipes, also if your house is owned by the council/ a land lord get them to deal with it, say its a health hazard and threaten with legal action if they are reluctant to act.
i have never ever heard of that happening! i have no idea how you are gonna stop them, i suppose you could put down the slug pellets on the ground where they will have to crawl over so they will eat it and die!!
I have the same thing happen and i live in a ground floor flat, sadly theres not much you can do unless you kill them , i hate slugs but i tend to just get a bit of cardboard and scoop them onto that and flick them out the window , although i end up doing that at about 4 in the morning as i'm trying to get a bottle for my baby , i find it's worse on rainy nights , and my flat is very damp , thats the joy of living in a ground floor flat !
