Why do so many people call an electrical socket a plug?

Question:

Answers:
People used to just use the term "plug-in". "Here, plug this into the plug-in." We Americans are pretty lazy when it comes to speech, so over time it just got shortened again. Most people would know the term "socket", but probably would not be able to think of it right off the top of their head.

Another example which for some reason irks me:
"I couldn't care less." and "I could care less." One is correct and makes sense in the English language, the other says the exact opposite of what people mean when they say it.

because you plug things into it. duh
Plug is what you hookup to the outlet, or what you do..not what you hook it up to.
because of the turn "go plug it in" generally, you plug it into an electrical outlet. plus, plug is a lot shorter than "electrical outlet"
I work for an electrical company.. everyone calls them plugs LOL They are called outlets or sockets...
I don't know but these people are idiots, I call it a socket. The plug is the bit that goes IN. You might as well call a vagina a penis or something.
duh! you plug electric devices into an electric socket, hence the name plug. What planet are you from?
Well, I can't refrain from calling it a 'plug in'.
I thought they were called receptacles. Help me out electrical supply employee.
