Please help if you can...?
Question:I BOUGHT AN OLD MOBILE HOME AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE TITLE I ONLY GOT A BILL OF SALE. I HAVE THE SERIAL NUMBER, BUT NOT THE MAKE AND MODEL. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET THAT WITH ONLY KNOWING THE SERIAL NUMBER? I WANT TO USE THIS AS COLLATERAL. PLEASE HLEP ME.
Answers:
I always wonder at the wisdom of purchasing any kind of vehicle ( and a mobile home is considered a vehicle in California where I live) without all the information. How do you know you bought it from the real owner if you didn't get a title? Anyway, no, the serial number is pretty useless unless you know the name of the manufacturer. In some states they require the license plate remain on the home and you buy annual "tags" for it. In other places it is taxed like a house.
The people you bought it from should have had tax or registration papers that would have all the information you need. I can't imagine any reputable lending institution giving you a loan using an old mobile home for collateral.
If the unit is in a trailer park, check with the park managers. If it is on someone's property, they should know something. If you are talking about a travel trailer, it should have a license.
The only other possible way to get the information you need is to crawl under the trailer and find the manufacturer's information plate. There should be a crawl hole where the hook-ups go under and the plate should be there. Or, some manufacturers put an ID plate inside the water heater closet.
Good luck, you may have a problem.
