How do I keep squirrels off of my birdfeeders?
Question:I'm having problems with squirrels attacking my birdfeeders, which are hanging on shepherd staffs. Is there any (safe) household products that deter these pesky critters?
Answers:
I decided to stop trying to beat 'em, because although they're "pesky" they sure are cute! So I discontinued using my bird feeder that's on a pole, and went to several hanging feeders in a pine tree. The squirrels have a little wooden swing feeder, and the birds have a hanging tray feeder up higher and more protected. Then there are the suet and food block feeders (yeah, I'm committed). When all these are full, the birds and squirrels eat together in peace. Before, the squirrels would just dump the whole feeder, find the large seeds they want, and the rest was ruined. With flat feeders, they pick through and there's much less waste. That said; bird feeder specialty stores carry all kinds of squirrel baffles to add to feeders of all kinds.
I named one of my squirrels "Taylor", after the gray-haired American Idol winner. He comes when I call him, and takes a peanut from my hand. It's so rewarding.
You can go to any hardware or home improvement store and buy a plastic disk that goes around the cord. Squirrels will fall off. The only problem with that is sometimes they learn to shake the cable and eat the seeds that fall.
there is many types of disks metal ones and plastic they even have ones that catch the falling seeds even tho at my house we jus use a be be gun
