Bug lights...flickering? My husban and I just moved into my grandmothers old house, she was a pack rat...?

Question:and she had a serious roach investation problem. Well, now that it is summer we have been spending alot of time in the back yard, and we just put some FLOURESCENT bug lights in these sockets out there. We have know Idea the last time those light sockets were used, the bulbs that were in there were dead. So we put the light in a flipped the switch, they took a few seconds to come on, and then when they did, they started flickering. What do you think the problem is. Is it that they havent been used in such a long time. I s there a short in the wires that could cause an electrical fire if we use them..some suggestions or insight would be helpful.

Answers:
It may be a wiring problem, or too much dust may have collected in the device. It may also be that the bulb is too old, so you may have to replace it because fluorescent lights often flicker when they have been used for a long time. Replace either the bulb or the socket or both, whichever you deem best. You can also buy small solar powered lights, they aren't that expensive.

You got a wiring problem. Don't use them until you get it checked out. It could cause a fire.
You can rewire it or call for an estimate from an electrician. May as well do it right, copper is EXPENSIVE, so think alternative, Solar Panels and Windmills and such. Leaving it in bad shape will just start a fire and then no one is happy.
check the socket, when they are exposed to the weather for so long the tin inserts go bad I'm willing to bet that its as easy as changing the socket.Go to the home depot and they will so you how to install a new socket.10 Mins tops..
