I have a chain link fence that I would like some privacy coverings, any suggestions?
Question:I would also like it to keep out the neighbors weeds from growing in my yard
Answers:
Plant something that will grow on the fence, like English Ivy. It grows pretty fast and you can arrange the twines to grow where you want them. The weeds on the other hand... you'll have to talk to your neighbor about that. If you spray weed killer, it will kill your ivy (or any other plants).
They make slats that fit in the links of your fence!! Weeds though need some extra attention. Try digging a couple of feet down the length of the fence and putting down some weed barrier and put boards down before putting soil back.
Plant some ivy or honeysuckle to grow up the fence.
For the weeds you might try some liquid edger but it will kill everything.
I have the same type of fence in my back yard, so I know how you feel. I've been looking into ideas myself. Here's some:
I would first begin by buying some type of weed kill product to spray around the area of your fence where you neighbors weeds grow in onto your side. You will have to repeat this procedure about once a month to control the weeds, depending on the strength of the weed kill type product you use. The directions on the spray bottle will tell you its' duration. The weeds will just turn yellow, but will not grow back right away (if you repeat the procedure often).
Next I would go to a gardening store and check out the various types of material you can purchase to cover the chain link fence and the best way to attach it.
Suggestions for material are: bamboo fencing, plastic latice in a choice of colors such as white, kelly green and brown, or redwood latice. There is also another kind of hard plastic material that appears to come in the form of slats that you slide through the actual chain link fence for privacy. I'm not sure where you can get that, but I see it being used a lot in commercial properties and townhomes. That provides a lot of privacy, but unless you choose the right color, it doesn't look "artistic".
Also, make sure you carefully measure the area to which you wish to cover, so you buy the right amount of material.
The only problem with the bamboo fencing, which comes in a roll and runs about $15.00-$20.00 for I believe a 6 foot roll, is that spiders can attach to it at the bottom easily (you'll need to spray bug spray at the base), and it doesn't last a really long time. If put up nicely, it can look good and definately offer you a lot of privacy.
Plastic latice I think is the best solution due to the fact that it will last you a long time, because it's brittle and doesn't desinigrate. You will need to place some plants in front of the latice for added privacy. But some white lights drapped on the latice will look really cool!
Have fun.I hope I've helped!
When I first moved into my house I had the same problem and did not want to go to the expense of putting up a wood fence. I planted a fast growing shrub every 4 foot and after the first year it gave me privacy. I have to trim it once in a while but it is easier than the maintenance of wood fencing. I don't have a problem with weeds as the shade under the shrubs will not allow them to grow.
There is webbing for people who want to reweb their lawn chairs - this could work.
