I am needing thermal drapes. Do the foam backed ones really work, or should I get lined ones? Differences?
Question:I have several rooms with windows that allow the severe summer heat to pour into my house. I've found a good deal on some foam-backed thermal drapes; however, I've heard that the lined ones work much better. If they don't work MUCH better, I'll be happy with the foam-backed ones. Do the foam ones work at all? I have only recently even HEARD of thermal curtains and am unfamiliar with but need them desperately. Thanks!!
Answers:
I've used foam backed drapes and they worked great for keeping the heat out as well as keeping the room dark at night for sleeping. They also muffle noise.
Actually you can get thermal lined black out which is the best for blocking nearly all the heat.
Foam backed drapes work on the theory that the air in the foam will insulate. Although air is an excellent insulator, the volume of air and air flow in the foam is very limited. Therefore you only get a minimal amount of RF insulating protection, of ability to block out or in the heat.
To answer your question, yes, they work some what but not as effectively as a thermal lined drape.
In our home we had a bonus room that was always very hot. After adding thermal black out to the sliding glass doors the room is now 10-15 degrees cooler.
years ago I had foam ones and they do work , but you wont have the light as much as your lined ones . Thats all I no about the differance.
The foam back ones, but they cost more....will help keep the room dark also.
