Why do people get rid of so much stuff when they move?

Question:I recently became addicted to the used furniture section on Craigslist. I found some unique one of a kind items to redecorate my apartment. What I found puzzling is that a lot of people sell a large amount of necessity furniture because they are "moving." I found that strange because I moved to many different apartments in my lifetime and I usually took most of my stuff with me. Now, I know sometimes, things can't fit in new places, etc. But it seems like people get rid of many necessary items...like end tables, desks, coffee tables, lamps, bookshelves. Don't you need these things in the next place that you live? It is so expensive to buy all new stuff. What really puzzles me is the college students that use stuff for less than a year, then get rid of it. This one ad actually said something like" I spent $2000 for this stuff in August the school is over and I am selling all of it!" I was shocked. I couldn't believe what a waste of money that was. I know they may not have room to store

Answers:
They are a pack rat or they just like buying new stuff. Most people have to much clutter and moving forces them to get rid of it or pay to have it moved. For the college student you mention, there is a good example of how NOT to be! Use your common sense and store stuff you can use again!

One of the main reasons is because the furniture will not work in their new house or they are moving in with someone else and have to get rid of things they do not have room for.

Or a lot of people may be like me and just want to get all new stuff for an all new place. It could be that they just do not want to move it...
It's simply human nature. Don't try to understand it, just accept it.
A lot of times its the cost factor of moving big things. College students for instance many times live quite a distance from the college they attend- so they would have to rent a truck to move all that stuff. Sometimes people are going from a big house to a small one, or they just realize they have too much stuff to move.
