Can I use cayanne pepper to get rid of rats?

Question:I heard that if I mix cayanne pepper in with my bird feed that rats and like creatures wont eat it but the birds will. I dont want to give up on the birds, will this work?

Answers:
My mutant rats didn't seem at all phased by adding cayenne pepper in my birdseed. Not only were they greedily eating what fell out of the feeders, they were climbing the trees, walking out on the limbs and trying to get at the food in the feeders hanging from the branches!

What does your birdfeeder look like? I placed mine on a pole and put a squirrel baffle (like this one: http://www.spackenkillschools.org/nassau... on it. Nothing can climb past it to get into the birdfeeder. If you have feeders on the ground or in trees, you may have to switch to pole-type feeders to avoid attracting rats.

Adding cayenne pepper to birdseed will indeed repulse some pestiferous creatures (like squirrels!), but this procedure is time-consuming and gets expensive.
