How much water does an average cotton plant need?

Question:And what type of soil does the cotton plant need? I'm doing a research project.:-)

I grew up in an area where alot of cotton was grown, the soil there was sandy and from what I think I have heard, cotton requires alot of water. You really can find all the information you will need by researching this subject at the Library or even on the Internet (but not on this site). Another resource would be a farm extension office near you.
