I have a 1/2 an acre and it is on two levels with a rock wall inbetween.?
Question:I want to get rid of all the grass on the lower level and put in either cement or bricks. I want a place for my kids to play and to be able to have a BBQ, a Fire pit, a picnic table and a place kids stuff. Does anyone have ideas how to do this easily and inexpensively? I don't mind doing it myself, but is it cheaper to do it yourself or in the long run just hire someone?

I was just reading up on ponds, so I'm inspired to ask: why not build a waterfall (not a pool, considering you don't want to risk drowning the kids)? build a path alongside it so the kids can walk alongside and float a leaf down the waterway.
As for cement or bricks on the bottom level, are you sure you want such a hard surface? Sand, a fine bark mulch, rubber mulch or other playground materials would be nice, too. Ask at the home improvement store for what materials they have to cover playgrounds where children will be. It would probably be no more to spread it than to buy the bricks or pour cement.
I have tried to do my own landscaping and it really does save alot of money. But.some of the work is too hard for me, and some just difficult enough that I put it off. So maybe some type of consultant or contractor to do the hardest parts. I did just see a home improvement show, where they rented a sod remover to cut out the grass before creating the playground. I didn't look too hard. Good luck!
This will be alot of work and will be time consuming. Depending up on what you decide to use as far as cement or bricks. Now you will have to start with cutting into the soil about 2 to 3 inches down mark your are and start removing the grass and level it out as to go but it will need to stay below the surface this way you can put your cement or bricks back where you dug out the grass or you could fill it in with sand and only do a spot big enough for your grill to sit on, with cement or bricks. the sand would be a better surface for children instead of a hard surface. wish you luck
