What are the benefits of adding epsom salts to plants.? Can it be used for all plants?
Question:
Answers:
It's a source of magnesium & sulfur for plants. In agriculture and gardening, magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) is used to correct magnesium deficiency in soil (magnesium is an essential element in the chlorophyll molecule). It is most commonly applied to potted plants, or to magnesium-hungry crops, such as potatoes, roses, and tomatoes. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other magnesium soil amendments (such as dolomitic lime) is its high solubility. Here is a good article that discusses the use of Epsom Salts in the garden: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/fertili...
I don't know about all plants, but I can tell you that adding it to African Violets causes them to bloom within a few weeks.I've done it and it works.
Check to see each plants needs. It's primarily adding Magnesium to the soil...if you have a plant that needs this then it will surely help.
Epsom Salts is for acid loving plants like camelia, azalea, gardenia, hydrangea.
It also lowers PH so those of you with acid soil should use caution. It also retards the growth of some mushrooms and other types of fungi. RScott
