Help for caring for lavendar?
Question:I just planted lavendar in our back yard. The instructions are in Deutsch, so I need to know how much sunshine and water they will need. I planted them where there is a lot of sun-is this correct?
Answers:
Lavender likes full sun and a well drained soil. Very simple to grow. Mine has been growing for about 7 years now and it comes through each spring even with cold winters here - sometimes falling below 0.
Yeah, they normally prefer the sun. Just make sure in the winter that you cover the plant up and protect it from the cold. Lavender is a semi-hardy perennial meaning it can't take real cold temperatures. You can cover it up with some pine branches or throw some mulch around it. Don't take cuttings off it too late in fall. Leave the branches on till spring and at the first sign of green sprouts coming out of the base cut the woody limbs back to about an inch or so from the ground.
Lavendar, being an herb, is very hardy and can even be invasive. Consider container planting if you don't want it to take over your yard. Plant in sun and don't overwater.
