What is the best food for a rhododendrum?

For general fertilizing, you can use a slow-acting organic fertilizer such as cottonseed meal or soybean meal. Or you can apply a fast-acting commercial fertilizer which includes ammonium sulfate. Super-phosphate applied in late winter or early spring ensures bud set and promotes intensity of color.
Rhododendrum's like acidic soil. I used to get something called Miricle-Gro Acid. It was a blue crystal that was added to water and it not only fed the plant, but increased the acidic content of the soil.
Miracid or Holly-tone. Available in garden centers.
They love acidic soil, like Blueberries and Azaleas. I would go with a light weight (possibly organic) fertilizer and work it into the soil when they first grow, once in the spring when they bloom and then once again mid summer for the rest of it's growth season.
Like 5 - 5 - 3, really light.
Rhododendron are acid loving plants. There are special fertilizer's for rhododendron and azaleas that will give the plant the right amount of acid it needs. I suggest you purchase a slow release fertilizer that will feed the plant over several months.
