How can I keep my pool water from turning green?

Question:I have been adding more than the recomended dosage of chorline, and the ph balance is where it should be.But I still can't get a reading of chorline on my test. What is wrong?

Answers:
First off, do you have a quality test kit or are you using dipping strips? Either way can you take a sample of water to your local pool store and have them test for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates

Bring the results back and post them here or feel free to email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and I'll be more than happy to help. Don't purchase anything at the pool store at this time as I'll guide you to everyday chemicals that are the exact same but much less expensive (baking soda, borax, muriatic acid, etc).

Please include the gallon size of the pool, material it's made of (vinyl, fiberglass, concrete/plaster), filtration system type (sand, cartridge, DE), chlorination type (floating, pucks in the skimmer, automatic feeder, salt chlorination system, etc), alternative sanitizers (ionizers like Frog, Nature2, etc), chemicals you have on hand (ingredients are best but name brands work too), chemicals you have on hand (again ingredients are best), and any chemicals you've used in the last two weeks if possible.

Always test the chlorine level first thing in the AM. After exposure to sunlight the testing can be misleading. How old is you test kit? Make sure the test drops are no more than two years old. Also make sure to test the PH.
Once the pool is forming algae, shock it ( sold at any pool supply) , then maintain PH and chlorine levels. The warmer the water in the pool the harder it is to keep it clear, and the more diligent you must be about testing.
I had this issue one year when the summer was particularly hot. It was an above ground pool , the water in the pool was very warm , I ended up having to shock about 1 per week to keep clear.
That happened to my sister's pool. It was algae. She had to get live bacteria and add to the pool. She purchased it at a pool supply store. it cleared up.
Go and take a bottle of your pool water to your local pool shop and they'll professionally test it and tell you how to prevent & fix.
