We are seeing swarms of small as a fingernail butterflies in our yard and wonder what kind they are?

it depends... do they have any other colors on their wings?

a little bit of orange- Brown Argus
brown w/ a hint of blue- Common Blue or, in rare cases, a Chalkhill Blue

there are tons of them
