Why are my magnolia flowers turning brown?

Question:I have just moved into a new house with two young magnolia trees. They have lots of buds, but they turn brown within a day of blooming. We live in northern California with lots of sun and not much rain, but we run our irrigation system daily. Is it drying out, or over-watered, or something else entirely?

Answers:
Depending on what kind of Magnolia tree you have, it may be a perfectly natural occurence. I live in Tennessee and have three 50' tall Magnolia trees. Their blooms usually last two days then turn brown. I am sure your magnolias are a different kind than the ones I have. There are many varieties for different climes.

most likely they are drying out the only way to tell is if they feel dry and they wilt
I had the same problem. You should plant the tree in some good quality potting soil. This way the soil will time-release water and nutrients to make sure it gets what it needs when it needs it. Regular topsoil tends to clump up. You can check out http://www.1800topsoil.com to see if they have good stuff for your climate. They are national, so they may have someone local. Good luck!
sun is overtaking them, find hardy trees that can survive the heat and lack of water.
