How can you tell when an onion is ready to pick?

Question:like dose it look different when its ready to pick

Answers:
Green onions, whenever the stem and bulb is larger than a pencil. Larger, slicing oniions--the tops will start to turn yellow, fall over, and start drying out. Unless you are in a very hot area, you can leave them in place until you need them, if you have temps over 90 degrees daily, dig them all up, let the dirt dry on them, brush it off, and store in a cool dark place. Don't wash until you are ready to use, water will make them rot.

Usually the bulb you can see coming out of the top soil. Once it is is coming up just a bit you can pick it. If you wait until the top starts to seed you have waited too long.
an onion pushes itself out of the ground; the longer you leave it and the larger it gets, usually the hotter the onion. but you can also pick early before it is completely out of the ground.
good luck
You can pick them whenever you need them. Harvest time is usually described as when the tops naturally fall over and turn brown. That is usually in the early to mid fall. If you want to use them for storage, fall harvest is best.

I pick a few when I need them, but save most for storage.
