Can elderberry plants grow in coastal southern CA?


Question:I want to plant elderberry in a pot and I am on the coast in southern CA. Will this work?

Yes, you can grow elderberry (SAMBUCUS) in So. CA.

Your best bet would probably be Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana). It does better in the warmer parts of California. The fruit is often used in jam, jellies, pies and wine! This species is drought resistant, but looks better (and keeps its leaves in summer) if given moderate water.
