Will climbing plants grow up copper pipes ?

Question:If you were to use copper pipes as a frame instead of bamboo canes would climbing plants be damaged or put off by the copper ?

Answers:
Copper pipe is fine for a trellis or arbor. It won't heat up any more than anything else. In time it will develop a nice green patina that will compliment your garden. It can be soldered together or you can connect it using epoxy.

Copper is going to be a lot hotter in summer and may burn your vines. Also, they have to be a vine that climbs by trendils. Remember that copper is a really smooth surface.

You didn't say what it is you are trying to train on the pipes?

In any event, natural materials are better. Bamboo or wood.

Good Luck!
copper will conduct too much heat for thr plant to survive, loosely cover the pipes with plastic netting and let nature take its course.
I think I see what you are trying to do....

Slugs are supposed to dislike copper as it gives them 'electric shocks' when they touch it. I take it you are using copper as opposed to bamboo to deter slugs?

Not sure how expensive copper piping is, but bamboo is quite cheap (I think I got my canes £1.49-£1.99 for 10 5ft canes). I've heard you can use cheap copper wire around the base of plants to deter the slugs as I think copper rings can be costly.

Do take heed about the heating of the pipes - it's a good idea to keep slugs away, but in the summer heat, the poor plants would fry. It's like you hugging a radiator in summer! (Provided it's not cold, wet & windy like it is now!)
I Have heard copper nails stop an unwanted tree but don't know as wouldn't even try it. so if its true then i doubt a plant would have a chance
My advice is to take the copper and weigh it in, then get to a garden centre or DIY shop and buy loads of cains or bamboo with the money. The copper will turn green after a while, taht may start to look strange and once you have planted your flowers may be a pain to replace the copper.
Good question, I might have to do a little experiment. I live in an area with alkaline conditions so copper turns a nice chocolate color not green like in areas with acid rain and soil. The old copper wire slug thing worked when I lived in Virginia, but not here in North Dakota. RScott
