How Do I Grow Lavender, in Portland, OR?

Question:My neighbors have large areas of lush, healthy, great-smelling lavender. I don't think they do anything to it. I planted a couple different kinds and one died, the others are very spindly.

(Also, am I s'posed to cut them back after blooming?)

Answers:
full sun and well-drained soil. yes, deadhead them. prune =cut back inspring

Here in the Willamette Valley you pretty much just stick them in the ground. They will grow. Of course with the weather we are having right now, it would require a lot of water. If you can hold off till late Sept. or Oct. when we start to get some consistent rain and not so hot days, you will have the best luck. You can trim the bushes in early and late spring. I shaped mine this year before they bloomed and still had great floral cover.

Good luck.
