How do you make a tree stop moaning?

Question:I have a tree that sits right at my back door, through out the year it creaks and moans. It drives me nuts. We are almost to the point of cutting it down. we are unsure if it weak or unsafe. Any ideas on how to make it stop?

Answers:
it sounds like it is maybe branches rubbing togeather or on your house check it out if so trim away from house or if it is rubbing branches take one out no big deal save your tree

Cut it down. It probably has hollowed out spots in it from disease.
wrap a few tiedowns around its trunk more than half way up, then stake them down like a tent into the ground. also have a tree trimmer person help you out.
I have and old cottonwood that does the same thing, but I would never want it to stop. Before I even get out of bed in the morning it tells me how windy it is outside and even makes different groans depending on the wind direction. It's a regular weather station and I would miss it if it were gone. RScott
I recommend ear plugs--they work wonders. However, if the tree is unsafe, it should be cut down by a professional.
