How do you kow when garlic is ready to pick?

Question:i have a russian red variety that i tried for the first time this year. the plants have shot up the flower bud things and the leaves are starting to fall. the directions that came with the garlic said wait till the leaves turn brown.

Answers:
Usually about 60 days after you planted it can be harvested. The surefire way is to gently dig one up without disturbing too many roots and check it when 60 days is up. If it looks mature the rest you planted at the same time should be also. If it's not just re-bury it a wait a little longer. You can wait until the leaves turn brown--they will just be bigger at that point. Once the leaves are brown the garlic is as big as it's going to get.
