Help!! **NASTY** neighbor. Any ideas for an inexpensive fence? I can put up something as high as 6'?
Question:This goes beyond the normal nastiness on their part. 5 kids next door think they are entitled to use my property, and the parents say it's my fault for buying the house- since I knew they had kids. ? These are NOT postage stamp size lots. (over 1/3 acre each) The last straw was a basketball hoop they knowingly put on my property. I had the property staked, but it's time for a fence. Too much aggravation to list it here

you may be able to find used stockade fencing free or at a minimal price.
used fence is usually as good as a new one and will surely keep the neighbors at bay.

damn i'd hate if anyone ever did that to me. well you could always build a privacy fence, but that could be expansive :(. but it will last you a long time, and you could grow a vine all the way up the fence so it won't be so boring.
How about the plastic or wooden lattace. It is less expensive than privacy. Or concrete blocks with timbers running through them. Or of course the chain link. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

I don't think that 6' is too high for a backyard fence, that's what mine are. With neighbors like yours I would think about a barbed wire fence! Thinking realistic now ... Your best bet would be something like chain link. A simple privacy/temporary fence may not last long with those kids. If they put up a basketball on your property, you have every right to remove it if you wish .. it is your property!

I agree with others that you're within your rights to remove the basketball hoop. Perhaps you could talk to your local authority, they often have a neighbourhood disputes specialist who may have some helpful ideas.
A fence is, as others have highlighted, expensive. What about a row of spiky plants, like cactus or holly or blackberry, along the boundary? An inexpensive alternative to a fence is a row of star pickets with wire strung between them. If that's not sufficient to stop them, you could attach a roll of bamboo or reed screening to the wires.
If all reasonable efforts don't slow them down, you could try pressing trespass charges against them, that should get their attention.
at home depot or other harware stores they sell this material its like matchstick blinds almost, like bamboo, and it comes in big rolls. If you put up a two by four frame you can nail this stuff to it. Quuite cheap, and its private and looks nice, actually. I think i saw it in the outdoor part of the store.

Electric fences are cheap! The little brats sure would not want a piece of that. You might have to run several wires so they cant get under / over it. Another idea is a photo electric eye which has a siren go off when the fence is crossed.
Barberry makes an interesting hedge, has thorns and berries. You could incorporate lengths of barberry where your neighbors kids would more likely infringe, and plant arborvitae, for privacy and a beautiful uniformed look of lush green all year round.

Chainlink fence is often the least expensive. In addition, you can plant vines such as honeysuckle or trumpet vine on the fence for additional "psychological" barriers. If you want another psychological barrier to accompany your fence, a "no trespassing" sign may help.
Professional installation of fences (unless you know what you're doing) is always best. As your neighbors seem to be disagreeable types, you may have to contact your city hall to find out exactly where your property lines are before you get started.
