Flowering trees in pot?
Question:Can you recommend a flowering tree that would do well in a large pot outside in my garden. I want to add some visual interst to my backyard and have seen this on tv. I live in zone 5. Can it be left out in the winter?
Answers:
Several varieties of crepe myrtle, crabapple, and flowering dogwood will do well in zone 5 in a pot, as will a few others that can also be left outside for winter. You can consult the Sunset Garden Book (they have a version for all of the U.S. now, not just the West) - look under the section on Patio Trees. Note that the Sunset zoning is different from the USDA, since they break areas down much more precisely and include summer temperatures and humidity in calculating zones, not just the winter cold. So find your zone first in the front of the book, then look for trees listed which will survive in your zone or colder.
You can also check your local nurseries, they should carry trees good for your area. Choose a tree which will grow to no more than 20 feet tall, preferrably no more than 10 feet. You'll need a large container, estimate 2 gallons of container for every 1 foot of final growth height for your tree. (a half wine barrel is about 25 gallons and will support a tree up to 12 or 13 feet tall) You can see http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art1...

Enjoy your tree!
what about tree roses? they are trained to have a long trunk with rose bush on top. Make lovely flowers and the whole thing looks nice. We plant Santa Barbara daises in the pot along with the roses.
I live in Penn. and I have several flowering trees and plants including. lilac, If you want vines use honeysuckle, bushes use lavender. All are left out in the winter
I am not really sure where zone 5 is, but a spectacular blooming tree is the hibiscus. It is tropical so in cold areas should winter indoors, but won't get too big, so it wouldn't be too big a problem moving it.
