Plant killer?

Question:I have a fenced in back yard that I don't have a lot of time to keep up(actually none) It is full of weeds and volunteer trees. I tired salting the yard last year in hopes that it would leave me with just dirt, but no luck. I'm looking for a recommend way to kill every plant back there, from grass to small trees. Once I have the yard down to as close to dirt as possible, I'm looking to lay patio blocks for permanent fix, but finances aren't there yet. Will weed block work if I just lay it down(and stake it of course) Anything else that will help tu chemically burn the yard to prevent more weeds, grass, and tree from growing back there?

I agree with most of what everyone else is saying, but Ortho has a product out that you spray called Total Vegetation Killer and it is supposed to kill what is already up and actively growing AND keep anything else from growing for one year. Depending upon how large your yard is, it could be expensive, but it has worked for me around my waterfall. It has killed bamboo and kept it away from the waterfall for a year now. You should be able to pick it up at your local garden center or retail box store. Good Luck!

Get Roundup Weed Killer! Its expensive but it will work killing weeds, flowers and etc.
The best way to kill all growth would be a general Weedkiller. You might have to dig out trees,to get roots out.Lay weed mat down(weedblock),and just use some stones to hold down. Now here is a problem. Weeds have remarkable regrowth. However much you try, they will find a way to grow. So keep some Roundup handy,to keep the little so-and-so's at bay. When you do come to lay patio blocks, try putting some sheets of heavy black or clear plastic down first. That is after you have put gravel down first and compacted it. This will assist against weed growth. Good Luck!
Round Up is a great product, but it is not designed to prevent regrowth, unless you get RoundUp Extended Control, which lasts for 4 months and is available in both a concentrated version and a ready to use bottle.

Now, if you want the product that will kill weeds, grass, and small brush/trees, I would recommend Ortho GroundClear. This will prevent regrowth for up to 12 months, which is perfect if you plan a laying a patio. It is available in a 1 gallon concentrate which covers 300 sq/ft if diluted per the label, it retails at Home Depot or Lowes for around 20 bucks. Make sure you get a cheap watering can that you don't plan on ever using again or only plan on using for this particular product.

It was formerly sold under the name Triox, but Ortho decided to make a name change, that proved to really boost the sales of this product.

Good Luck in your war against weeds!
1st of all, I have learned that as long as you have dirt, things will try to grow in it. If I think I understand what you are proposing to do, I believe that you want to put so many toxic chemicals in the ground that nothing will grow there.

So think about it. Even fields that were once toxic waste dumps have weeds in them. I also assume that you have neighbours who probably DO want things like grass & trees growing in their yard, & maybe even want their yards to be safe for their kids to play in. Once you put these proposed chemicals on the ground you will lose control over them, & they will leach all over the neighbourhood.

What I think you want to do is call in a paving contractor & have them just pave over the whole lot. But watch out, because as soon as a crack develops something will start to grow out of it.

Actually what some people are starting to do these days is to rent a rototiller for the weekend, & till over the entire yard.
Then they lay in an organized assortment of patio stones, rocks, ponds, & wildflowers. A lot of people are getting tired of maintaining putting greens on their front & back yards.

But you sound more like you would be happier in a nice high rise condo in the city somewhere. :)
I agree somewhat with one of the responses already. Try renting a rototiller from an equipment rental place. Till the whole yard, then lay the landscape fabric down and stake it. Then cover it with whatever rock or peagravel or whatever you want. Pavers are not easy to install yourself, and they sometimes heave and need to be lifted and the substrate leveled again and reinstalled. Lots of Florida and Arizona and other warmer states have yards that are all pea gravel, so that might be something you would like. Not for me, but then again, not my yard!
Your yard is fenced! Find your local 4-H club. There may be a kid living nearby who will bring over his goats/sheep periodically, especially if you pay him a little for his trouble.
You need a industrial strength total ground sterilant called Barren. It will kill all vegetation and keep it down for up to a year.
