How can i make a composter?

I've seen and read about every high tech and low tech system going and I like mine the best! First, throw a fan shaped branch on the ground, I like cedar and juniper but anything will work. Second throw about a foot of material to be composted on the branch, I pull my weeds so there is always little dirt included. If you don't weed then add a little. Third add another branch and continue making layers. The branches do two things, they allow air and water into the pile and they make it easy to dismantle when you want to use or rotate the pile. To turn, place a fresh branch on the ground next to the pile and pull or kick or rake the coarser material into a new layer cake. Whats left on the bottom is compost - yum! RScott
Just pile kitchen scraps (non meat/dairy) and yard clippings on top of each other - toss every other week or so. I also add scraps of cardboard & some newspapers. If the pile doesn't get rained on you might need to water it. If you want it contained build a 3 walled structure out of scrap wood - we used pallets. Or you could dig a hole & pile all the scraps in the hole.
If you are looking for a small composter just for household scraps, you can make one using a soda pop bottle. Basically, you chop off the base, and invert it in a deli container. A second inverted container acts as a lid. I've included a link with complete instructions and how-to photographs.
For myself, I use both a wire compost system and a pit compost.
Wire composter is made by shaping chicken wire into a cylinder shape about 2 1/2 feet across.
Pit compost is merely tossing your compost into a shallow hole, and then covering up with newspaper and grass clippings. In a couple of weeks, you turn the pile over with a pitchfork. With a pit compost system, my compost usually breaks down in about 2 months.
