How do I keep squirrels from eating my wood steps? If they keep gnawing at them, I'll have to get new risers.

Answers:
Try spreading the steps with ben-gay or cayenne pepper.
If that doesn't work, call a local garden center to see if they have anything.
there are alot of things on the market for this however i put moth balls around the area they are working believe me they will leave
I never tried moth balls since it didn't work for birds, I just fed them in a bird feeder and they were fat and happy.
Feed them some peanuts in the shell or dried corn on the cob or birdseed (sunflower seeds)..
I just now got back from the hardware store where I happened to see something called "Squirrel Repellent"
guaranteed to deter squirrels. Call around to see if they have it where you live. If nothing else I would spray ammonia on the steps, that should deter them too.
My neighbors and I were plagued by squirrels that lived in an adjoining wooded area. They eat everything and tear up everything. I bought a squirrel feeder, put it on a post at the FAR end of my yard, and keep it filled with black-oil sunflower seeds. The furry little suckers have never since ventured into anyone's yard. Much cheaper than shotguns, traps, squirrel repellent, and everyone (including the squirrels) are happy.
Jeez, whats with all the mothballs and other stinking repelants, doesn't anyone want to smell the roses anymore! If the pesky little tree rats are chewing your steps, they are trying (successfully it sounds) to add minerals to there diet. Do as others have suggested and create a feeding station for them and then add a mineral block sold for rabbits and other bucktooth beasts. This should keep them a bay until this fall when you can "bark" them out of the tree for some revenge and squirrel gravy - yum! RScott
