I have found that what really helps is to prevent the problem starting in spring. In spring, turn over all of your soil (except where you have perennials coming up) with a spade and add in lots of peat moss. I buy the biggest bales of it I can find, and usually use about three in a year in my tiny garden. Then, throughout the summer your soil is nice and loose making it easier to weed. Also, when you are turning your soil over, pick out any weeds or roots of weeds that come up.
I would also recommend weeding when your soil is fairly dry, as the roots tend to break off more easily when the soil is wet and clumpy (especially in clay soils).
Throughout the summer, weed frequently (at least once a week) to get them while they're small. Try to get the entire root if possible. If weeding regularly isn't your thing, try putting down landscape fabric with rocks over it to block out the weeds completely (works great for a flower or shrub garden, a little trickier for a vegetable garden). Good luck!
P.S. - I have no idea why someone would give my answer a thumbs down! Geez, try to be helpful and what do you get!!
The easiest household products to kill weeds are salt or alcohol. Just get a spray bottle of salt water and add some rubbing alcohol, stronger the better, and go to town on those weeds. Works really well on sidewalk cracks.
smother them with mulch-
try one of those chef flame throwers-
paint them with zero-
plant so much other stuff that will choke them out.
different weeds have different needs
Pull them out and then mulch. You have to pull them when they are young. Reason being that each weed can produce thousands of seeds so its important to get them out before they spawn seeds. One pigweed will generate 100,000 to 500,000
seeds. One gust of wind and thats all it needs to spread!
mulch, mulch, mulch
