Best time to plant a blossoming cherry in NEPA?
Question:We have a blossoming cherry tree in our front yard, but this year it was eaten by ants. My dad wants to plant a new tree to blossom by next spring, but is afraid that if he does it now, the roots will not set in time to survive the winter. Does anyone have any insight into this situation?
Answers:
You will have no problems planting it now, just make sure it gets a good soaking either rain or by a hose every two days. It will have ample time to grow roots before the winter. Also a good idea to use super phosphate or 0-20-0 when planting, this will help promote root growth. I am a degreed horticulturalist with many (too many) years of experience.
Becky, the best time to plant trees is actually in the spring or in the fall. To plant in the summer will put stress on the tree and its root system and you will need to constantly water. Plant the cherry tree this fall (mid-September to mid-October) in Northeastern PA and you should get blossoms next spring if the tree is mature enough to blossom.
